HERBAL GARDEN

All the oil extracts (infusion oils) contained in our ointments are produced in the Monastery. The extraction is mainly made by heat-infusion. The herbs are immersed in their carrier oils in stipulated analogies and controlled temperature by the means of up-to-date equipment. Along with the oil extracts, hydroalcoholic extracts are also being deployed. The active constituents of the herbal extracts are boosted by other basic materials like essential oils and hydrosol, which are known for their efficacy in skin care. This way, the effectiveness of the ointments is intensified and the greatest result when applied is ensured.

The combination of the aromatic herbs, and, by extension, of their extracts in the ointments is based on scientific research and advice of specialists in collaboration with the Monastery. Above all, the ten-year feedback the Sisters had been given from people who benefited from the products is of invaluable assistance in their efforts.

Ιπποκαστανιά: Η αγριοκαστανιά περιέχει τριτερπενοειδείς σαπωνίνες [κυρίως την αεσκίνη (escin)], κουμαρίνες και φλαβονοειδή. Η αεσκίνη που περιέχεται στους καρπούς της αγριοκαστανιάς έχει αντιφλεγμονώδεις ιδιότητες και αυτή κυρίως καθιστά την αγριοκαστανιά εξαιρετική στην ενίσχυση των τοιχωμάτων των φλεβών, τα οποία αν χαλαρώσουν ή φουσκώσουν μπορεί να προκαλέσουν κιρσούς, αιμορροΐδες ή άλλα παρόμοια προβλήματα. Ακόμη, η αγριοκαστανιά ελαττώνει την κατακράτηση υγρών, αυξάνοντας τη διαπερατότητα των τριχοειδών αγγείων και συντελώντας στην επαναπορρόφηση των επιπλέον υγρών από το κυκλοφορικό σύστημα. Η αγριοκαστανιά αναγνωρίσθηκε ως φαρμακευτικό φυτό το 1565, στη μετάφραση του έργου του Διοσκουρίδη Περί Ύλης Ιατρικής από τον Pierandrea Matthioli.

Αμαμελίδα: Witch hazel (hamamelis) is also known as “winterbloom” because blossoms in winter, comes from North America. The Indians from Oneida tribe used to use the infusion of its styptic leaves as a poultice for the cure of bruises, skin infections (insect bites) and edema.

Both the leaves and the bark of hamamelis are rich in tannins, flavonoids, phytosterols, sugars and oil. They are used in Pharmaceuticals for their styptic, toning, hemostatic, and anti-inflammatory properties. A recent study has proved that preparations containing hamamelis can have as effective results as hydrocortisone for the cure of atopic eczema and psoriasis.

Hamamelis is an ingredient for cosmetics formulations, as well. In products for oily skin or skin prone to acne it is used for its astrigent and anti-bacterial properties. It soothes irritation, eliminates blackheads and refines pores. Hamamelis is beneficial for hydration of dry or sensitive skin. It can also be applied as a pain reliever on sunburns in summer.

Κυπαρίσσι: This plant exhibits spasmolytic, anti-rheumatic benefits. As it improves blood circulation, it reduces pain in joints. It is also used for varicose vein, phlebitis, rheumatic pain and swelling.

Κισσός: Hippocrates used ivy not only to prevent intoxication and reduce swelling but also as an anesthetic. Ivy oil is effective in stimulating blood circulation. Two components of its oil extract have been mostly researched: Triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids. Triterpenoid saponins combats bacteria whereas flavonoids remove toxins from the body and tighten and strengthen blood vessels.Die Triterpenoidseifen und Flavonoide sind die beiden wichtigsten Bestandteile dieser Pflanze.

Καλέντουλα: Calendula petals are primarily known for their healing abilities against skin irritation and rash. It prevents the spread of the infection and speeds up recovery. It is used externally for eczema, burns, micosis, sunburns, athlete’s foot and against inflammations in general. Its antifungal, antibacterial, and antivirus properties are attributed to the presence of different chemical compounds including carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, terpenoids, flavonoids and other constituents in its oil extract. The effectiveness in the healing of wounds, sores and various inflammatory and minor skin conditions is due to effecting blood capillary vessels tightening.

Lavender Essential Oil

Its main constituents are geraniol, linalool and linalyl acetate. It is very renowned for its healing properties and is widely used for burns, insect bites and skin irritations. It also lessens acne and soothes burns and ulcers. Research suggests that lavender oil has many advantages for hair, too.
